 Widely recognized as Australia’s most popular poet, Bruce Dawe was born in Fitzroy, Victoria, in 1930. He worked in a variety of occupations before retiring from the University of Southern Queensland in 1992 when he was appointed their first Honorary Professor.
After successfully completing a Bachelor of Arts, two Masters degrees and a PhD he was awarded honorary Doctorates from the University of Southern Queensland and the University of New South Wales. Other awards include:

Australia Council for the Arts Emeritus Writers Award for his long and outstanding contribution to Australian literature (2000).

Bruce Dawe has published 13 books of poetry, one book of short stories, one book of essays, five children’s books (Penguin) and has edited two other books. His collected edition Sometimes Gladness, was named by the National Book Council as one of the 10 best books published in Australia in the previous ten years
