The Staff and their Roles

HEADMASTER
Dr Barry J. Arnison, OAM, B.A., M.Ed.Admin., M.Phil., PhD., FACE
Dr Arnison was a foundation staff member of Somerset College when it opened in 1983 and was appointed as Headmaster in 1987 after the retirement of the founding Headmaster. Dr Arnison's background includes Maths/Science and Educational Administration. His previous experience includes service in the R.A.N. and teaching in various State High schools and The Southport School as Head of the Science Department. Dr Arnison and his wife Gillian have two daughters, both of whom attended Somerset.

SENIOR DEPUTY
Mrs Beverley Gallus, B.Sc., Dip.Ed., MACE
Mrs Gallus was also a foundation member of staff at Somerset College teaching Mathematics and was appointed Senior Mistress in 1985 and Deputy Head in 1987. She was educated at Melbourne University where she later became a lecturer in Chemistry attached to the Melbourne Secondary Teachers' College. After an absence of some years she returned to her career at Camberwell Girls Grammar School teaching Senior Physics and Mathematics and Junior Science. She is married with four children.

BURSAR
Mr Ian Turner, B.Bus.(Acc.), FCPA
Ian joined the staff of Somerset College in 1987 as Bursar. Previously he was engaged in the Accounting profession in Brisbane and was educated at the Queensland University of Technology. Mr. Turner and his wife Fayleen have three sons all of whom graduated from Somerset College.

HEAD OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
Mrs Virginia Lamb, Dip.T.,Grad.Dip.Ed.(Early Childhood), M.Ed., MACE
Virginia joined the staff of Somerset College in its third year. Previously she taught with the Queensland Education Department and also in London for two years. After nine years as the Director of Early Childhood Education Mrs Lamb was appointed as Head of the Junior School in Semester 2 1998. She and her husband John have a son who attended Somerset College.

DEPUTY - ACADEMIC / IB CO-ORDINATOR
Mr Michael Brohier, B.A. (Hons), Dip.Ed., M.Litt, MACE
Michael joined the staff of Somerset College in 1996. He came to us from Pulteney Grammar School in South Australia where he was Director of English and The Arts. In this capacity he had the ultimate responsibility for the areas of English, Music, Art, Drama, Technology Studies and Electronics. Mr Brohier and his wife Fran have a son who attended Somerset College.

ASSISTANT TO THE HEADMASTER - STAFFING and POLICIES
Mrs Lindy Peters, LLB, Grad.Dip.Legal Prac., B.Ed., Dip.T., MAIPC
Lindy joined the staff of Somerset College in 1991 teaching Health and Physical Education. She has been in her current role since 2002, previously having been Dean of Students and prior to that Head of Franklin House. Lindy and her husband, Michael, have two sons Dion and Jamie.

DEAN OF ADMISSIONS and COMMUNITY RELATIONS
Mr John Bacon, B.Sc.(Hons.), Dip.Ed., Grad.Dip.Ed.Admin.
John joined the staff of Somerset College in 2003 from Melbourne Girls Grammar School where he was the Director of Community Relations. Having graduated from the University of Queensland he initially taught Physics and Chemistry at The Southport School where he was also a House Master. He has held senior administrative positions in Queensland and Victoria. John is married to Wendy who also works at Somerset College.

CHAPLAIN
The Rev Colin Batt, B.Ed., Th.Dip.(Hons.), Dip.Min., Cert.CM, MACE
Colin joined the staff of Somerset College in July 2003 from All Saints College in Bathurst. Colin is a teacher and ordained Anglican Minister. He was Chaplain and Youthworker at several schools prior to his appointment to Somerset. Colin is married to Vivienne and has three children.

DEPUTY – JUNIOR SCHOOL
Mrs Michele Sauer, M.Ed., B.Ed., Dip.T., MACE [Co-ordinator International Baccalaureate MYP]
Michele joined the staff of the Junior School at Somerset College in 1985. In 1993 Michele was appointed as Year 7 Co-ordinator and in 1998 she was appointed Junior School Curriculum Co-ordinator. She was promoted to Head of Department-Junior Curriculum in 2003. Michele is responsible fo co-ordinating the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. Michele has a son who attended Somerset College.

DEAN OF STUDENTS
Mrs Anita Day, B.Sc. Dip.Ed., Grad.Dip.Comp., Cert.Sch.Man., AATD, MRACI, C.Chem.
Anita joined the staff of Somerset College in 1993 from Oaklands Central School, NSW, where she was Relieving Principal. A teacher of Chemistry and Science, she was appointed Head of Laver House in1998, then Dean of Students in 2002. Mrs Day has two children, both of whom attended Somerset College.

ACADEMIC COUNSELLOR
Mr Greg Cater, M.Ed., B.App.Sc. (Maths), Dip.Ed., Grad.Dip.Comp.Ed., MACE
Greg joined the staff of Somerset College in 1990 as Head of Mathematics and became Academic Counsellor in 2000. He has two children both of whom attended Somerset College.

PROPERTY/MAINTENANCE MANAGER
Mr Bruce Zillman, Builder.
Bruce joined the staff at Somerset College in 1986 and was appointed Property/Maintenance Manager in 1988. Originally from Brisbane, where Bruce completed his apprenticeship in carpentry, he is now a licensed builder responsible for supervising maintenance, construction and cleaning at Somerset College. In 2004 Bruce was the recipient of the Spirit of Somerset award. Bruce and his wife Debbie have three children.

ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE - STAFF ROLES


TEACHING ROLES


The House Tutor
- bears the primary responsibility for the academic progress, general development and welfare of each senior school pupil within his or her tutor group.    The House Tutor is responsible for monitoring uniforms and Somerset diaries of their pupils and for the upkeep of their House Room.  The House Tutor should be the first point of contact between Senior School parents of the school and will also ensure when appropriate that, Heads of House and Senior Executive staff are made aware of problems relating to particular pupils.

The House Tutor is legally responsible for the pupils in their group during Tutor Group and other allocated House events. 

The House Tutor is responsible for the maintenance and updating of academic attendance and general pupil records.  Part of the House Tutor's responsibility is to conduct academic reviews and, in conjunction with Heads of House, ensure that documentation and follow-up is recorded on the pupil's file.

Year 8 Supervisor
- is responsible for the induction of new pupils in Year 8, for the transition of pupils from Year 7 to Year 8 and the general welfare and discipline of Year 8 pupils throughout the year.

Co-ordinator of the Senior Common Room
- has overall responsibility for the effective running and general atmosphere of the Senior Common Room as well as dealing with any discipline issues that may arise.  The Co-ordinator of the Senior Common Room also liaises closely with the Dean of Students and Academic Counsellor to provide a network of support and guidance for the Year 12 pupil body as a whole.

Co-ordinator of Committees
- has overall responsibility for the effective running and co-ordination of the various pupil committees in the Senior School.  These committees provide an opportunity for pupils from Years 10 to 12 to be involved in leadership activities in a variety of areas within the school community.

Pastoral Care Co-ordinator-Junior School
- is responsible for pastoral care matters in the Junior School and assists the Head of the Junior School and Deputy-Junior School with disciplinary matters.

Subject Co-ordinators
- are responsible for the effective and efficient running of some single subject areas in the Senior School or specialist teaching areas on the Junior School.

Subject Master
- the role of Subject Master closely resembles that of the Head of Department.  It is however, distinct and separate from the Head of Department role in that the subjects offered in Years 8-10 are not core subjects and as such, are not taken by all students in those years.

Assistant Head of Department
- the role of Assistant Head of Department exists in the Senior School in the departments of English, Mathematics and Science.  The role is to assist the Head of Department with the curriculum implementation for Years 8, 9 and 10.

Head of Department  - Lower Primary
- is responsible for the co-ordination and supervision of academic matters in the Lower Primary.

Heads of Departments – Senior School
- are responsible for major subject areas and in particular, the curriculum, approach to teaching, development of programmes and assessment of the pupils in the Senior School.

Heads of Houses
- are responsible for the co-ordination and supervision of pastoral care and discipline within their Houses.  The Head of House will monitor the overall progress including academic, extra curricula and social development of pupils within the House.  The Head of House is responsible for the management of the House team in intraschool competitions.

Director of Sport
- is responsible for overseeing the co-ordination of pupil sporting and recreational activities within the Senior School.  The Director of Sport works closely with the Director-School Activities and the Junior School Health & Physical Education Co-ordinator.

Academic Counsellor
- is available to advise pupils, parents and staff on academic choices and academic counselling for pupils.  The Counsellor also provides information to pupils about tertiary institutions, tertiary course prerequisites, study skills and career information.  The Academic Counsellor is responsible for the induction of new pupils in Years 11 and 12 and for the general welfare and discipline of senior pupils.

Director-School Activities
- is responsible for pupil activities within the school and overall responsibility for the school's outdoor education programme in the Senior School.  The Director–School Activities also acts as the Headmaster's representative of the Somerset rowing, tennis and swim clubs.  Has a general role in assisting and maintaining pupil discipline, efficient daily routines within the school as well as responsibilities in relation to transport, bus charter and road safety.

Dean of Students
- is responsible for the co-ordination of pupil support systems and services for pupils in the Senior School.  The Dean of Students is the co-ordinator of pastoral care in the Senior School and is the Chairperson of the Pastoral Care Committee meetings.  The Dean of Students plays a significant role in disciplinary matters for Senior School pupils.

Chaplain
- is responsible for the co-ordination of all matters relating to the spiritual life of the school, including all services within the school.  The Chaplain is assisted by the Assistant Chaplain and both are availble for personal counselling for pupils, parents and staff.

Deputy-Junior School
- is responsible for the organisation and supervision of academic and administration matters in the Junior School.

Deputy-Academic
- is responsible for the organisation and supervision of academic matters in the Senior School.  The Deputy-Academic is the co-ordinator of curriculum matters in the Senior School and is the Chairman of the Curriculum Committee meetings, co-ordinates the International Baccalaureate and is Chairperson of the Celebration of Literature.

Head of Junior School
- is responsible for supervision of the operating routines, the programming of events and the  pastoral care and discipline in the Junior School.

Senior Deputy
- is responsible for supervision of the operating routines, the programming of school events, co-ordination of pastoral care and discipline in the Senior School.  The Senior Deputy stands in for the Headmaster whenever the need arises.

Headmaster
- The Headmaster is the chief executive of the school.  He is appointed by the School Council and is responsible to the Council for the proper conduct, management and discipline of the school.


 
NON-TEACHING ROLES

Co-ordinator of Teaching Practice
- is responsible for the development of a process of reflective teaching practice for all teachers in both primary and secondary.  Responsible also for overseeing professional development and mentor of teachers in order to satisfy, as a minimum, the requirements of the Queensland College of Teachers.

Head of Archives
- is responsible to the Headmaster to ensure that the school records which have value as authentic evidence in the life of the College's community are retained, stored and made available only to the appropriate authority.  The work of the archivist encourages understanding of the College's culture through the retention of its administrative, academic, spiritual, sport and social memory.

Information Systems Manager
- has overall responsibility for the information and technology services and equipment provided to pupils and staff at Somerset College.

Property/Maintenance Manager
- is responsible for school maintenance, the receipt and distribution of goods inward and to supervise staff including cleaners, security, grounds staff, electrical engineers and builders, including contractors.

Dean of Admissions and Community Relations
- is responsible to the Headmaster for enrolments, admissions of new pupils into the College.  In charge of community relations, publicity and promotion of the College.

Assistant to the Headmaster Staffing and Policies
- is responsible to the Headmaster for administration, personnel and general staffing matters.  Responsible for overseeing school handbooks, checking and maintaining school policy documents, including the Staff Guide.  Is the designated Work Place Health and Safety Officer.

The Bursar
- is responsible to the Headmaster for the financial operations of the school and the state of its grounds and buildings.
