International Committee

OUR AIMS

To develop an international awareness within the school community where cultural diversity is respected.

To create a friendly atmosphere for new international students at Somerset College.

To offer a wider level of cultural knowledge that enables our Australian students to be well informed about overseas countries, developing a way of thinking that enhances their perceptions of the world in general.

To organize fund raising activities with the view to donate funds to worthwhile charities.

HISTORY

The International Committee was formed in 2001. The Committee was started with only 6 members who met once. It has now grown to encompass a large group of seniors who continue to showcase and support multiculturalism.

The Committee was established with the idea of developing leadership skills for the senior students. As part of their role, the committee offers support to all international students, making sure that they assimilate well into the wider school community.

The main focus of the Committee is to encourage a feeling of friendship between cultures and to help the general school community become more aware of how we can support communities that are less fortunate than ourselves. Furthermore to encourage giving something back to the community thus; we focus on fund raising activities.

A further initiative that was established in 2004, involved the collection of flags of countries represented within the school community, with the idea of acknowledging and showcasing specific international days and special occasions. We are proud to be able to show case these flags in a specially made flag cupboard that is situated in the Great Hall.

ACTIVITIES

International Food Stall - Delicious international cuisine is prepared and purchased from the tuck-shop. Committee members give their time to help advertise, organise and work behind the counter as assistants to the tuck-shop convener the day.

Wish for Peace Day - The main focus of this day is to encourage the school community to throw a coin into the school fountain and say a prayer for peace the money collected is donated to a chosen charity.

Harmony Day - Celebrates the idea of Internationalism where 'We are one'. A special chapel service is organised by the committee members. The chapel begins with a procession of flags that represent the nationalities of both pupils and staff of Somerset College. The service always focuses on acknowledging multiculturalism. Orange ribbons are sold and worn in recognition of all nations. The money collected is donated to a nominated overseas charity.

Celebration of International Festivals

International/ESL Dinner - For this, the International Committee arrange a dinner to establish friendships and to farewell Year 12 pupils.

Flag Raising - International Days are identified and the appropriate flag is flown on the flag pole at the entrance of the school throughout that day.
