Chess is a sport/intellectual pursuit where study and over-the-board games are of equal importance. It is virtually impossible to become a strong player by doing one without the other.
Tournament play and official ratings achievement are recognized over the above course achievements. For this reason each of the six certificates is available with a (plus) version.
Pupils joining the course who are already keen chess players will be able to take the test at levels appropriate to their current knowledge.
These days, more and more teachers and parents are recognising the educational benefits of chess. Various credible research has shown that chess helps cognitive development. It develops critical and creative thinking, reasoning and memory. Significant improvements in mathematics results and reading scores have been shown, and chess has also been shown to assist with problem-solving skills.
Chess lessons are organised on a term basis, with the provision of a minimum of 32 lessons per year, averaging 8 lessons per term. These will be invoiced by Gardiner Chess, separate from the College tuition fees and the supplementary account.
