Chess

The Gardiner Chess Course is taught to students at the college. It is structured into six sections. At the end of each section, a non-threatening, short verbal test is conducted between tutor and student. When the required standard is reached, a certificate of successful achievement is presented. Students who do not pass initially will be asked to revise the failed item and repeat the verbal test. The course is taught at a pace suitable to the students involved.

Chess is a sport/intellectual pursuit where study and over-the-board games are of equal importance. It is virtually impossible to become a strong player by doing one without the other. Tournament play and official ratings achievement are recognised over the result achieved in the above course. For this reason each of the six certificates is available with a plus ( ) version.

Students joining the course who are already keen chess players will be able to take the test at levels appropriate to their current knowledge. These days, more and more teachers and parents are recognising the educational benefits of chess. Various credible research has shown that chess helps cognitive development. It develops critical and creative thinking, reasoning and memory.

Significant improvements in mathematics results and reading scores have been shown, and chess has also been shown to assist with problem-solving skills.

Chess lessons are organised on a term basis, with the provision of a minimum of 32 lessons per year, averaging eight lessons per term. These will be invoiced by Gardiner Chess, separate from the College tuition fees and the supplementary account.
