Cultural Awards Criteria

Non-Academic Achievement Awards

Senior School


School Honour

This award honours pupils at Somerset College in the areas of non-academic achievement and leadership.  To achieve this award in the pupil's non-academic chosen activity, the pupil will have demonstrated skill and talent generally at the highest level available.  To achieve this award in the area of leadership the pupil will have demonstrated exemplary leadership at a level recognised and respected by staff and pupils for their contributions to the College.

All recipients of this award will have also demonstrated:

  • an exemplary manner in the representation of the College and in school spirit
  • exemplary citizenship and have acted as a consistently positive role model to the general school community
  • an acknowledged commitment to preparation and assistance in developing the school ethos over an extended period of time.

Candidates for this award are nominated by relevant staff for consideration by the relevant Awards Committee for recommendation to the Head for awarding of honours.

Pupils who reach this honour, post award presentation, will be presented for consideration and honours will be awarded if deemed appropriate.

Full Colour

This award is the second highest level of non-academic achievement recognized by Somerset College.  It is awarded on the basis of outstanding performance in the pupil's chosen activity and excellence in representation of the College.

Recipients of this award will have also demonstrated an excellent level of citizenship and school spirit, a commitment to preparation and assistance in developing the growth of the area within the school over an extended period of time.

Candidates for this award are nominated by relevant staff for consideration by the relevant Awards Committee for recommendation to the Head for awarding of full colour.

Pupils who reach this award level, post award presentation, will be presented for consideration and awards will be made if deemed appropriate.

Half Colour

This is a major award granted by Somerset College for non-academic achievement.  It is awarded on the basis of very high levels of performance in the pupil's chosen activity and whose actions represent the best interests of the College.

Recipients of this award will have also demonstrated a very high level of citizenship and school spirit, a commitment to preparation and assistance in developing the growth of the area within the school over an extended period of time.

Candidates for this award are nominated by relevant staff for consideration by the relevant Awards Committee for recommendation to the Head for awarding of half colour.

Pupils who reach this award level post award presentations will be presented for consideration and awards will be made if deemed appropriate.

Criteria for achieving a Non-Academic Award in the Cultural Area – Senior School

Music Awards

Contributions and performance within the music medium.

Drama Awards

Contributions within the drama/theatre medium.

Public Speaking Awards

Contributions within the public speaking medium.

Debating Awards

Contributions within the debating medium.

Performing Arts Awards

Where pupil contributions involve more than one  genre/medium.  The criteria for music, drama and other areas must be met.

Honour Board Awards

At the completion of each school year, Honour Board Awards are presented in the areas of music and drama.  These awards are given to pupils who throughout their time at Somerset have achieved a high level of performance as well as a high level of commitment and provide an excellent role model for younger pupils.

Non-Academic Achievement Awards

Junior School

Half Colour

The pupil must be a member of at least two (2) of the major performing groups within the school over a period of approximately two years.  Commitment to and during rehearsals must reflect the level of the award.  Recipients of this award would be considered role models for younger pupils.

Full Colour

As above except three years involvement in at least two of the major performing groups.

N.B.  For the purpose of this award, the major performing groups are Junior School Concert Band, Junior School Chorale, Junior String Orchestra 1, Year 6/7 Musical and Recorder Consort

Criteria for achieving a Non Academic Award in the Cultural Area  Junior School

Year 6, 7 Musical Awards

The children selected will need to have:

  • played a speaking part in the musical.
  • performed outstandingly in their part giving a convincing characterisation.
  • worked enthusiastically in all rehearsals always attending regularly and on time.
  • maintained a positive and helpful attitude throughout the preparation months and week of the performance.

The Junior School Music Co-ordinator is responsible for presenting nominations for the award to the Head of the Junior School for ratification/amendment.

Music Awards

All pupils considered for half and full colour awards in Junior School Music must have demonstrated a dedication to the betterment of fine arts within Somerset College.  They will have displayed a high level of commitment to rehearsals and must have reached a high performance level within one of the aspects of the music field.

It is expected the pupil will be learning an instrument or receiving vocal tuition.

S.A. Everitt Perpetual Trophy

A special award called the S.A. Everitt Perpetual Trophy, is given annually to a Junior String pupil who has displayed a high level of achievement on his/her instrument and has made a considerable contribution to the Junior String Programme.  This presentation is made at the final Junior Instrumental Concert each year.

Tainton Family Instrumental Award

The award is for recognition of considerable contribution to the general instrumental area of the Junior Music Department and for a high level of commitment and performance.

Junior School Choral Award

The award is for recognition of considerable contribution to the general choral area of the Junior Music Department and for a high level of commitment and performance.

Junior School Performing Arts Award

The pupil selected should be one who is highly involved and shows good competency in the Performing Arts areas of the Junior School.

Areas for consideration where involvement is possible:

Music

-  has vocal tuition

-  learns an instrument

-  plays in a school orchestra or ensemble

-  sings in the Junior School Chorale

-  involved in the Year 6/7 Musical

Speech

-  has Effective Speech tuition

-  studies for Trinity College of London examinations (or similar).

Public Speaking

-  involved in the Interhouse Public Speaking Competition

-  involved in the A B Paterson College Public Speaking Competition

Debating

-  involved in inter class, intra class and inter school debating

Eisteddfod

-  involved in the Gold Coast Eisteddfod

-  involved in the Somerset Festival for Young Performers

-  involved in other eisteddfod (e.g. Beenleigh, Murwillumbah)

Dance

-  learns dancing

-  involved in dance concert.

Also, whilst the award is not to be exclusively a Year 7 award, it would be expected that a Year 7 child would be the recipient.  The recipient to be selected by Junior School Music Co-ordinator.
