A broad spectrum of acting
styles are encountered by the Speech and Drama pupils. A major component of their assessment is
performance work. An audience is always
welcome at these Year 11 and 12 performances.
Specific dates of
performances of Drama Assessment will appear in the Pupil Assessment Booklets.
These occasions are
entertaining and provide the Drama pupils with extra demands, experiences and the
enjoyment of live theatre work.
House Plays are performed
towards the end of Term 1. The plays are
selected, produced and directed by pupils.
House Plays had their inaugural year in 1991 and are one of the
highlights of the cultural calendar.
There is no allocated school time to available to rehearse. Pupils rehearse in their own time.
This is a friendly competition in which the true spirit of ensemble theatre comes to the fore.
This interschool Drama
Festival has three divisions:
- Junior (Year 8)
- Intermediate (Years 9 and 10)
- Senior (Years 11 and 12)
Each of these divisions presents a One Act Play in a competition with other secondary schools on the Gold Coast. The plays are directed by members of staff. The Festival occurs mid-August. From a time commitment perspective there is no allocated organised time to rehearse. Pupils who wish to participate in the Festival need to be aware that their own time will be needed for rehearsal. This Festival gives actors a true sense of the theatre.
The Somerset Dance Troupe
began in 1992 with a small but very energetic group of girls from Years 9 to
11. They were most successful during the
year with award winning performances at various festivals on the Gold Coast and
at school functions.
This is a creative dance
group - a group of dedicated young people who train hard in their own time and
strive for artistic dance excellence.
New members are always welcome to try out for the Troupe and are
encouraged to attend the major auditions held early in the academic year.
Tuition in dance is
offered for all pupils from Early Childhood Class to Year 12. The styles offered are jazz, modern, funk,
tap and classical ballet. Tuition occurs
out of school hours in the Koala House.
Dancers contribute to the cultural activities occurring during the year
and perform in concerts.
