A Guide for Parents and Pupils

INTRODUCTION

Sporting activities play an important role in a pupil's life at Somerset College. The scope of these activities has broadened considerably over the years and includes Physical Education, team sports, individual sports, House sport and representative sports.

The school's sporting programme forms a vital part of a pupil's overall education, and as such requires regular attendance at training sessions and participation in all activities as laid down in the school calendar.

This handbook has been produced as a guide to parents, staff and pupils and the procedures and regulations outlined are designed to provide for the efficient management, coaching, co-ordination and supervision of what is a very busy and full physical education and sporting programme.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aims and objectives of the College Sports Programme stress the concept of maximum participation and emphasises the following:

(a) character development
(b) development of team spirit
(c) development and maintenance of sound attitudes to physical
fitness, sport and recreation
(d) acquisition of skills and learning through progressive practices
(e) development of social, as well as sporting attitudes
(f) promotion of lifetime interests
(g) to provide opportunities for pupils to develop to their full
potential in their chosen sport at school, District, State and
National level.

SWIMMING

Each pupil from Early Childhood Class to Year 5 will participate in one swimming lesson per week. The qualified instructors will assess the pupils at the commencement of the programme and divide them into the appropriate groups based on skill level. The school swimming programme places emphasis on each child learning the basic components of the freestyle stroke, before learning the other more challenging strokes. The aim of the programme is to advance with the developing level of the child, so that existing skills and technique development are maximized. Year 6 and 7 will participate in a swimming unit twice throughout the year.

The swimming uniform expectations are listed at the back of this section. Please remember that pupils are encouraged to wear the appropriate uniform. Parents should be advised that it is their duty to ensure their children comply with the uniform standards in the interest of being sunsmart.

Non-attendance at a swimming lesson needs to be supported by a letter from home, and prolonged absence due to medical reasons must be supported by a medical certificate.

SPORT

Somerset College is affiliated with two sporting associations. They are:

  • APS (Associated Private Schools) This association involves seven Gold Coast independent schools. They are, Somerset College, Emmanuel College, All Saints Anglican School, Trinity Lutheran Primary School, A.B. Paterson College, Saint Stephen's College, Coomera Anglican College and King's Christian College.
  • Gold Coast South Primary School Sports Association. This includes some 31 State and Independent schools on the Gold Coast.

HOUSE COMPETITION

All pupils from Years 4 to 7 are involved in Inter-House competitions. The houses are:-

  • Andrews (Yellow)
  • Franklin (Purple)
  • Laver (Green)
  • Starkey (Red)
  • Veivers (Blue)

The House or Intra-School competitions are:

  • Tabloid Games
  • Tug-O-War
  • Swimming
  • Athletics
  • Cross Country
  • Chess

SPORTS TRAINING

Where possible, sports training will be held during school sports time. Once interschool competition commences on Thursday afternoons, pupils will be required to attend after school training on Tuesday, 3.30 – 5.00 pm. This after school training is compulsory. This occurs during Term 2 for Winter Sport and Term 4 for Summer Sport.

As all pupils and parents are aware of these conditions, we strongly encourage that other arrangements such as appointments are not made for this time. It is also stressed that pupils are punctual for their training, thus reducing disruption to the other pupils and coaches.

SELECTION TRIALS

All pupils from 10 years to 12 years are given the opportunity for selection in the various Gold Coast South District teams, to go to Regionals and then perhaps State. Those sports are basketball, hockey, netball, rugby (APS only) soccer, touch football, tennis, cricket and softball. Pupils also compete at District swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals, which double as selection trials for those sports.

SPORTSMANSHIP / CODE OF CONDUCT

All pupils participating in sporting activities must observe a code of conduct and behaviour that will reflect credit on themselves, the College and their family. Listed below is a guideline of standards of behaviour to be observed:

  1. Pupils will not behave in a manner that may bring discredit on themselves, their team, or the school.
  2. Acceptable community standards of behaviour to be displayed at all times.
