A Guide for Parents and Pupils

INTRODUCTION

Sporting activities play an important role in a pupil's life at Somerset College. The scope of these activities has broadened considerably over the years and includes team sports, individual sports, House sport, representative sports and a wide range of recreational activities.

The school's sporting programme forms a vital part of a pupil's overall education, and as such requires regular attendance and participation in all activities as laid down in the school calendar.

This Handbook has been produced as a guide to parents, staff and pupils and the procedures and regulations outlined are designed to provide for the efficient management, coaching, co-ordination and supervision of what is a very busy and full sports and recreational programme.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aims and objectives of the College Sports Programmes stress the concept of maximum participation and emphasises the following:

(a) character development
(b) development of team spirit
(c) development and maintenance of sound attitudes to physical
fitness, sport and recreation
(d) acquisition of skills and learning through progressive practices
(e) development of social, as well as sporting attitudes
(f) promotion of lifetime interests
(g) to provide opportunities for pupils to develop to their full
potential in their chosen sport at school, District, State and
National level

PROGRAMME

The College is a member of the Associated Private Schools Association (APS) and participates in regular sporting competition within this Association.

The member schools of the APS for the 2007 school year are:

  • Somerset College
  • Emmanuel College
  • All Saints Anglican School
  • Trinity Lutheran College
  • A.B. Paterson College
  • St. Stephen's College
  • King’s Christian College
  • Coomera Anglican College

The College is also a member of the Queensland Secondary Schools Sports Association and participates in sporting competitions organised by the South Coast Regional Sports Office. The APS Association of Schools is represented as the Hinterland District.

Regular competitive team sports are conducted during sports afternoons throughout the year against the above schools, with special emphasis being placed on the winter and summer sports competitions. District trials are also conducted in selected sports, in order to choose District representative teams to compete in Regional Championships, which could lead to Regional representation in State carnivals and ultimately State selection for National competitions. National teams are often chosen in particular sports and this achievement is the ultimate for school based athletes.

As well as the winter and summer sports competition the major interschool sports activities are swimming, athletics and cross country. These carnivals are keenly contested with outstanding performers proceeding to Regional, State and National championships.

Interhouse competition is conducted during the year in the main disciplines of swimming, cross country and athletics as well as the major team games. House teams to compete in these competitions are chosen from House trials in which all pupils must participate.

Attendance at swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals is compulsory for all pupils.

Traditionally the philosophy of the College has emphasised the value of recreational sports and activities. Pupils not involved in interschool sports in summer and winter competitions may be offered the opportunity to participate in sports not contested by our district sports association. Some of these activities include: rowing, sailing, kayaking, equestrian or cycling.

A wide variety of activities is provided with some activities leading to certification through a course of progressive practice and assessment.

PARTICIPATION

All secondary pupils at Somerset are to:

  • nominate a summer and winter sport of their choice
  • attend and participate in House trials for swimming and
athletics and represent their House if selected
  • participate in the Interhouse Cross Country
  • attend all major College sporting activities, interhouse and
interschool competitions and any competitions involving
    visiting teams as directed
  • attend all training sessions and fixtures relating to their chosen sport
  • ensure any medical or dental appointments are not made duringsports training time or sports fixture time
Note that training for most sports occurs on Monday andWednesday afternoons from 3.30 pm to 5.00pm Most sporting teams normally train on one afternoon a week. Matches takeplace on Friday afternoons from 12.30pm and may conclude atany time up to 5.00pm.

Pupils at the College are encouraged to participate in as many sporting and recreational activities as possible with a view to:

  • becoming proficient in their chosen activity
  • gaining the benefits of mutual competition and participation
  •  widening their sporting and recreational interests to allow them to participate in sport/recreational activities during later life
  • promoting a healthy lifestyle and appreciation of the benefits of involvement in a regular sporting or exercise programme.

From time to time the College accepts fixtures against visiting schools from interstate and overseas, and also organises tours both interstate and overseas. These interschool fixtures and exchanges are invaluable as both cultural and sporting experiences for our pupils and all members of the school community are encouraged to participate in and support these events.

Equestrian

The Equestrian Programme is under the guidance of professional and accredited equestrian coach, Nicole Tough. An experienced competitor herself, Nicole has enjoyed State Squad selection since 1994 and was part of the Olympic Athlete Programme for two years. Nicole attended Somerset College, graduating in 1989, and was a founding member of the school Equestrian Team.

Equestrian at Somerset is listed as a Development Sport and paid for as a co-curricular activity. The team consists of a range of pupils from Years 8-12 who must exhibit a keen interest, commitment and desire to improve their standard of riding. Equestrian is a recognised summer and winter sport at Somerset.

Equestrian sport caters for ‘hobby’ riders, whose aims consist of improving their knowledge and riding skills and improving the overall harmony and balance of their horses, as well as ‘competition’ riders, whose aims consist of the above as well as competing for their school with the aim of qualifying for the State Championships.

Training sessions take place on Friday afternoons during the school’s compulsory sporting programme. Pupil's voluntarily attend competitions on weekends against other participating schools in Queensland. The season culminates in the September holidays when the State Championships are held. Somerset College has a long tradition in winning many team and individual State Championships. The competitions that the pupils compete in consist of Dressage, Hacking, Showjumping, Eventing and Combined Training.

Equestrian pursuits at Somerset are heavily supported by the parents of the pupils. The horses are required to be at the training sessions as much as possible and parental help is needed in their safe transportation to and from the training grounds at Somerset College (and also from time to time at Mudgeeraba Showgrounds / Mottee Park Equestrian Centre, Advancetown).
