Adam Sambrook, President
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Firstly, may I introduce myself to you — my name is Adam Sambrook. I am delighted to have been nominated for this position and am looking forward to working with the Club Committee, Somerset College and all of you, to ensure that we have another successful and enjoyable season.
I would like to welcome all new and existing members to the 2011/12 swimming season. Please be encouraged to participate in all club events, as they provide the ideal opportunity to have a chat, make new friends and learn more about the world of swimming. Our club nights are a great environment for both competitive and recreational swimmers with the objective of achieving personal goals and having fun. For those with a more competitive streak, there will be many opportunities this season for you to hone your skills.
We are all proud of the wonderful facilities and the quality of the coaching programme here at Somerset. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact myself, or any of our Committee members. There is considerable experience amongst the group and we are all happy to welcome and assist you. Additionally, the Somerset Swim Club now has a Facebook page for members, which can be found by clicking here.
MISSION STATEMENT Somerset Swim Club aims to provide a fun and happy environment for all to pursue their love of swimming. The club endeavours to support its swimmers at the level they choose to aspire. The club is fortunate to have exceptional facilities, an experienced coaching staff and supportive families. We welcome you and invite you to become part of a wonderful team as you strive to be the best you can be.
SWIM CLUB SERVICE The Swim Club operates as an avenue for swimmers to undertake competition both from within the club and against members of other clubs. Competitions are graded to allow swimmers to compete at an appropriate level with the view to improving themselves. Swimmers need to communicate with their coach on appropriate meets to enter.
PARENT SUPPORT/VOLUNTEERS At every club meet there is always a need for willing volunteers who are prepared to give up some of their precious time to help with the enormous task of organising the programme. Time keepers, recorders, marshals, helpers to set-up, pack-up, or lend a hand at the barbecue, are ALWAYS appreciated. The more people we have who are willing to assist with these jobs, means the less often you will be called upon. Please don’t wait to be asked - VOLUNTEER, it makes life so much easier.

Point Score Swims The club programme is designed to recognize EFFORT and IMPROVEMENT. Whilst our club championships and other various meets that swimmers attend are structured around competition with other swimmers, the regular club nights reward a swimmer’s personal performance. Swimmers receive points for every event in which they compete at club night, attempting new strokes and distances, and, swimming personal best times.
Point Score The point score system is designed to reward ALL swimmers on the basis of personal performance. Swimmers at any level can do well in the point score competition by consistency in:
* CLUB NIGHT ATTENDANCE * WILLINGNESS TO ATTEMPT NEW STROKES/NEW DISTANCES and * IMPROVEMENT OF PERSONAL BEST TIMES.
Point Score Calculations At club night, swimmers will receive at least ONE point for each event in which they compete.
Swimmers will receive THREE points for each personal best time that they swim during each club night.
To qualify for the Overall Point Score Trophies and Age Champions, a swimmer must compete at no less than fifty per cent of the available club nights throughout the season. Swimmers representing the club at inter-club meets (or higher) during the club-night period, shall be able to substitute no more than fifty per cent of the required attendance at club-nights to be eligible for Overall Point Score Trophies and Age Champion.
Throughout the season, swimmers should update their list of Personal Best Times for each event. A form for this can be found on the main page of the Swim Club website. It is important for swimmers to know their Personal Best Times and to aim at improving it the next time they swim.
Swimmers’ times from the previous club night will be posted on the Notice Board which is located on the pool deck.
Club Championships Club Championships bring the whole club together for a fun day of competitive swimming. All club members are encouraged to participate in the Club Championships with medals awarded to the first three placegetters of each event.
To be eligible for consideration for either the Point Score Winners’ Trophy or an Age Champion Trophy, swimmers must have swum at a minimum of half of the available Club Nights throughout the season. Members who compete for the Club at an external competition are able to count these events in place of a club night attendance. There are no exceptions, so please get all your swims in early.
EXTERNAL COMPETITIONS Club Targeted Swim Meets During the season there are many meets at which swimmers can compete. Somerset coaches have selected our targeted meets for the season. This list is given on the following link . Meet invitations will be placed on the club room noticeboard for your attention. Please check with your coach whether the meet is appropriate for you before entering.
How to Enter a Swim Meet You will need to complete a Meet Entry Form found inside the club room or by following this link. Please complete theentry form in full and accurately. If you do not know your times then please check with the Race Secretary (do not guess). If you have no “official time” then put in NT (no time). Correct entry times are especially important for meets which have qualifying times. If you do not meet the qualifying times, you cannot enter that event. It is a requirement to provide complete and accurate information for meets conducted by the Brisbane Swimming Association, Swimming Queensland and Swimming Australia Ltd. Include the correct entry fee with the entry form and deposit it in the nominations box in an envelope with your name and the meet details written on the front.
