On Saturday 10 September the Somerset College Foundation welcomed 120 guests to its second Garden Party on the Fitness Centre Concourse.
The Garden Party is conducted to raise funds for the Foundation’s Scholarship Fund. We were delighted to have Condev Cares, a charity initiative by Condev Construction, as our major sponsor for the Garden Party and we thank them for their significant support!
After weeks of fine weather, grey clouds and light rain welcomed our guests but this did in no way deter the guests who enjoyed an afternoon of fellowship and fundraising.
After months of hard work the Garden Party Committee had put together an outstanding collection of auction items and bidding was intense from the time it went online. In fact this year the number of bids increased by over 30% from 2014. Over $42,000 was raised through the auction and my thanks go to all the generous members of the Somerset Community and local businesses who gave so willingly and generously.
The Somerset String Quartet welcomed our guests upon arrival and after lunch the “In Conversation with Alumni” was conducted by the Headmaster. This year we welcomed Catherine Lee (Class of 2012), Councillor Hermann Vorster (Class of 2002) and John Ronaldson (Class of 2010) back to the College to share their Somerset Experiences with us and also to tell how scholarships at Somerset and elsewhere have helped them achieve their goals.
An addition this year was the auctioning of The Seat of Knowledge. Spirited bidding saw the value of the Seat grow until the final bid of $7,000 was received from the Hickey family. We all thank them for such outstanding support. My thanks to Bede Young for conducting the auction.
An event such as this does not just happen. This year we had a dynamic committee who worked tirelessly to make the day a success. I am sure everyone who enjoyed the Garden Party will join with me in thanking the committee members, Idy Chan, Penny Walker, Cathy Mitchell, Penny Thurnwald, and Bede Young were all magnificent in putting together all aspects of the day. Thanks also to Annette Bartels who was a member of the committee at the beginning of the planning process. My special thanks also to Andrea Lewis and Cecilia Robertson for their work in preparing the event and running the auction.
Annette Allen was the driving force behind the event. As a past parent she continues to demonstrate the passion she has for the Scholarship Fund. It is her determination and drive that made this year’s Garden Party so successful. Thank you, Annette.
My thanks go to Sue Roberts and the String Quartet for their welcoming performance. Valerie Fang and Mayuri Yamaguchi were magnificent at the sound desk – thank you. We were fortunate to have Little Truffles cater for the event and we thank them.
