The holidays provided Somerset Tennis players with opportunity to compete in a number of tournaments with some fantastic results.
Luke Shirley was a Quarter finalist, while Luke Buker won the Consolation final in the 10 and Under Boys’ Singles. Jack Newman and Noah Jay both made the 3rd Round of the Consolation in the 12 and Under Boys’ Singles, with Noah enduring a two hour marathon in his last match.
The Rod Laver Tournament is the largest tournament in Queensland with nearly 1,400 matches and is the equivalent of a State Championship. Tennis Captains, Yukimaro Ii and Sala Yoshida competed, with Sala reaching the 2nd round only to find the 12th seed in the 16 and Under event. Yukimaro showed his development over the last year in reaching the Semi Final, losing to the Tasmanian top seed. His playoff resulted in placing 4th in the event and the number 2 Queenslander. This result was surpassed by his efforts in the Doubles which earned him the Runners Up Trophy.
All players competed with humility and respect and are fine representatives of the College. We look forward to the upcoming Brisbane International Schools competition for the Junior School players in August as our next major competition.
