The National Open Swimming Championships which doubled as the World Swimming Championships selection event was held in Brisbane from Sunday 9 April to Thursday 13 April. Somerset had 6 swimmers compete through the week; Yolane Kukla, Carlos Licuanan, James Roberts, Anarnya Berlowitz, Regan Leong, Ben Treffers and alumni student Toby Wilson.
James Roberts placed second in the 50m Freestyle in an outstanding race with Cameron McEvoy and James was selected onto the Australian team for the World Championships in Budapest later this year. Ben Treffers won the 50m Backstroke and placed fourth in the 100m Backstroke. Although the 50m Backstroke was not a selection event for the World Championships, Ben was selected onto the Australian team for the World University Games later this year. Well done James and Ben.
The National Age Championships were held in Brisbane following the National Open Championships between Sunday 16 April and Sunday 23 April. There were 25 Somerset swimmers who competed at the meet across individual and relay events. Well done to all those who competed individually at this National event where qualification itself is extremely challenging – Casey Wilson, Anarnya Berlowitz, Connor Borkowsky, Conor Brown, Riley Clout, Ky Codd, Olivia Collins, Cameron Donovan, Sebastine Du Preez, Georgia Ellwood, Millie Entwistle, Carlos Licuanan, Yasmin Madigan, Emily Noyes, Brooke Otto, Jorja Otto, Andrew Parkinson, Adele Phillips, Leon Shirayama, Brooklyn Steele, Sara Tazaki and Jordan Wilson.
The Somerset Swim Club managed to finish 33 on the points score out of nearly 200 swim clubs with the following swimmers making it through to finals and scoring points. Some of these swimmers were extremely close to winning medals with a number of close fourth place finishes:
