On Tuesday evening students and parents of the Somerset Rugby Community celebrated the 2016 Rugby Season at the annual Rugby Dinner. The Great Hall certainly lived up to its name, all decked out with rugby-related paraphernalia.

David Hossy, father of College and Rugby Captain, Duncan, kindly offered to adorn The Great Hall with two massive projector screens and this certainly added a superb element to the occasion. This year’s guest speaker was Jane Pocock, mother of famous Wallaby, David. Jane spoke about her family, and particularly David’s journey to the top of world rugby. It was a great insight into a man who is as well-known for standing up for his beliefs as he is for his playing ability. A true role-model to all our players here at Somerset College.

As usual, the main highlight of the night was hearing the stories from all the teams chosen speakers. Some truly hilarious moments which I’m sure their fellow team members will cherish and remember for many years to come.

The evening culminated with the major award winners being announced. The following boys received recognition for the ability they showed throughout the 2016 season:

  • South Coast Under 18 Rugby: E’Shea Gafa, Tyrone Grace, David Korin, Charles Pye, Joshua Vuta
  • Presidents XV: Charles Pye
  • Combined Independent Schools, Queensland Schools and Australian Schools: Joshua Vuta
  • Preston Cup for Outstanding Sportsmanship in Rugby: Charlie Liu and Benjamin Gallagher
  • Gold Coast Trophies Best Non 1st XV Back: Henry Arbon

  • Somerset College 1st XV Players' Player of the Year: Craig Hales
