Round One of the Gold Coast South Junior Inter-School Chess Competition was held last Wednesday 8 March in Caningeraba State School. Somerset’s contingent of 68 students once again put on an excellent performance.

Our top team, who were crowned National Champions in Perth over summer, won gold in A Grade. King's Christian College finished second overall, and our second team finished in third place. Somerset’s teams also won bronze in C Grade and D Grade.

Oliver Yang won all 7 games, while Eason Wang finished on 6/7. Other top performers included Kenny Ming 5 points in A Grade, Nikita Rubis 5 points in A Grade, Xavier Focas silver medal in C Grade with 6 points, Aden Webber bronze medal in D Grade with 5.5 points, and Casper Crampton fourth place in D Grade with 5.5 points.

  • Doeberl Cup, held at the Australian National University in Canberra over Easter. Some top Somerset students will be taking part in one of Australia’s biggest chess events.
