The Gold Coast High Schools Teams Chess Round One competition was held last Wednesday in The Great Hall. Somerset had an excellent turnout of 42 players. The Somerset teams performed exceptionally, winning gold and bronze in A Grade and bronze in B Grade.

New Chess Captains for 2017, Kevin Song and Talia Varcoe, both set high standards for the rest of the team to follow.

In A Grade, Somerset 1 came first on 21.5, from King's 20, Somerset 2 19, TSS 18.5 and Hillcrest 17. Best players for Somerset were Jack Luke-Paredi 3rd, Kabilan Manuneedhi 4th, Kevin Song 6th, Ben Atia, Lyanna Chan, Talia Varcoe and Alex Taylor-Girdler.

In B Grade, Angus Cheung came outright first on 7/7. Lachlan Hartley and Nina Varcoe also did very well.

2016 Tin Cup

The Tin Cup is an annual event for adults and juniors, this year held over the weekend of 11 and 12 February. Somerset made a good showing, with the best performers being Kabilan Manuneedhi and Jack Luke-Paredi on 4/6, followed by Ben Atia, Eason Wang and Mayuri Yamaguchi on 3/6.

Upcoming events

A reminder to all students that lunch club is open every day, located in Toohey 2.6. Challenge other students, and get some tips from our coaches, Mr Curtis and Mr Stojic.

Junior School co-curricular enrolments are still open for Term One, with pro-rata rates available. For Senior School, it’s not too late to join the Tuesday morning group (7.15am to 8.15am), hosted by Mr Stojic.
