Throughout the Celebration of Literature, a talented group of Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 students performed an adapted for stage version of Tim Baker’s gorgeous story “The Surfer and the Mermaid”.
The play followed a young surfer who spent everyday at the beach surfing the waves, until one day he fell off his board and went deeper and deeper into the underwater world. Deep beneath the surface he meets a group of mermaids from the Kalani Kingdom who teach him about the destruction the people above the surface are causing to the marine environment.
The week was very busy with six shows within the College across three days and one free community show on Saturday at the Tugun Progress Hall. During the week the cast performed for students from Pre-Prep to Year 2, with an additional show for Mudgeeraba Special School students. The show was a resounding success and a special congratulations must go to the cast for their enthusiasm and beautiful performance work throughout the busy week.
Special thanks to Mrs Fisher for her guidance and support throughout this amazing experience. To author and Celebration of Literature keynote speaker Tim Baker, I am eternally grateful for being given the opportunity to work with the amazing picture book he created in partnership with Ted Grambeau. Thanks must also go to Mrs Anne Mason and Mrs Anne Short for their beautiful costumes and to Miss Flynn and Ms Jade Hopley for their creative set design and video.
