Well 2020, what a year – what an incredible understatement! One could be forgiven for sitting back and moaning and complaining about the impact of COVID 19 on 2020, on our College, on our businesses and on our personal life.
Each of the IB programmes has a culminating project – for the IB Diploma this major project is called the 'Extended Essay'. The Extended Essay is a major academic undertaking consisting of a 4000 word research essay conducted in a subject of the student’s choice.
Being Chaplain of a school like Somerset brings many joys and Christmas is a time which highlights one of the best of them, blowing the Christian trumpet to produce tunes which are music to the ears and meat to the souls of believers and non-believers alike. Our College community represents all views of faith, non-faith, and uncertainty about faith; so while it is important to reference the Christian message, it is equally important that the truths are universally applicable regardless of people’s belief systems.
Thanks to the generosity of Somerset families, over 250 other Gold Coast families will have an unexpectedly brighter Christmas this year. A few weeks ago, the Christmas tree in reception began to sprout a small collection of bags of groceries, decorations and toys at its feet.
The end of the year is upon us and Somerset Rowing has had its presentation dinner, Corporate Challenge and the Come and Try sessions in the pool this term. The dinner was a fantastic night to recognise the great achievements of our athletes this season, as well as announce Sofia Smith and Fergus McKeon as Rowing Captains for 2021.
We started off the year with many wonderful workshops and have come together with many of our Alumni Wordsmiths. Working in groups, our 2020 Wordsmiths captains supported us in each workshop and were often found offering advice and praising our young talented writers.
The tournaments are coming thick and fast at present for students playing outside of schools with the Cookies Rapids on Saturday and the Gardiner Chess Blitz and Transfer Championships being held on Sunday. In the Cookies Rapids, Calen Tang scored 4.5/7 to finish in sixth place, whilst also picking up 28 rating points.
This term has seen a select group of Senior School students volunteer their time and creativity to produce a performance for the students in Pre-Prep and Prep. Based around the IB Theatre Collaborative Project, Year 7 to 11 students devised, workshopped, wrote, rehearsed and performed an original 20 minute performance based on the 'You Can Do It' Program.
