This week we congratulate our tennis players, swimmers and cross country runners on their various achievements in sport!

Tennis

Congratulations to Luke Shirley and Jack Newmann (Year 6) who recently won the Gold Coast Inter-School Primary Tennis Tournament held at Southport over the weekend. The boys were up against some very strong competition from 26 other schools across the Gold Coast such as TSS, Elanora, Marymount, Saint Andrews, All Saints and St Stephens. Jack and Luke went through to the Quarter Final undefeated at 4-0, 4-0, 4-0. Then played the Quarter Final against Elanora which they won 4-2, then the Semi Final against TSS 4-1 and the Final against St Stephens 6-3!

This is a fantastic achievement for the boys and a great achievement for Somerset College.

Swimming

During the week Bessie Dear, Anthony Graham, Lilli Hodge and Phoenix Kyaw swam at the South Coast School Swimming Championships held at Southport Aquatic Centre. Well done to these athletes for qualifying for these championships. We will find out next week whether they have progressed through to the Queensland State Championships to be held at Chandler Aquatic Centre later on in the term.

Cross Country

The Cross Country season is well and truly underway. The attendance and enthusiasm at training has been outstanding as our Junior School Athletes are preparing themselves for the Cross Country Carnival in Week 2 of Term Two. Training will continue Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings 7.00am on the track for all students in Years 3 to 6. Last Thursday 30 students ran in the 2km time trial. It was a great indicator of fitness for this time of year. Congratulations to the time trial leaders Harry Walters (11 Year Boys) who ran 8.11min and Alex Halloran (11 Year Girls) who ran 9.38min. The next time trial will be on Friday 10 March on the track. Hope to see you there!
