Over the weekend 5 Somerset students participated in the Under 18 Rugby Union Championship held at Sunnybank Rugby Club. Joshua Vuta, Kai George, E’Shea Gafa and twin brothers Charles and Lewis Pye accounted for almost one quarter of the South Coast squad and when they all started in some matches it meant that Somerset College players made up one third of the starting team - a superb statistic in itself!

The South Coast squad managed to make their way through the pool stages unbeaten. Seeing off Metropolitan East 26-12 and last year’s champions, Sunshine Coast 10-7 on Day 1. Day 2 was a touch easier with the team putting the Chairman’s XV away 32-7 and keeping Peninsula scoreless with a 19-0 win. Day 3 bought about the Semi Final and South Coast found themselves up against Northern. The game was a torrid affair with South Coast winning through to the Grand Final with a tough fought 15-7 victory. This meant the team would face arch rivals, Sunshine Coast in the final after they had bounced back from defeat at the hands of the South Coast team on Day 1 to go through the rest of the tournament unbeaten. The final was always going to be a tight affair with both teams defensively very strong. South Coast managing to secure the game with a nail biting 12-5 win.

2017 - W4 - T2 - Under 18 Rugby

Charles Pye capped off an outstanding tournament with a Man of the Match performance in the final and along with Josh Vuta and E’Shea Gafa was named in the Combined Secondary Schools team to trial for the Queensland Schools team in June. A marvellous achievement for all 3 boys! Lewis Pye and Kai George also had strong tournaments just missing out on selection.

Congratulations to all 5 students on their excellent tournament and for being integral in South Coast being crowned State Champions for 2017.
