The Gold Coast High Schools Teams Chess Finals were held last week at Saint Stephen's College. The whole squad of 25 players put in their best performance of the year.
The top team comprising James Kay, Kevin Song, Kabilan Manuneedhi and Jack Luke-Paredi were very convincing winners of the premier group, scoring 27 out of a possible 28, 7 points clear of second placed King's Christian College, with TSS 1 and Somerset 2 a further point back. Kevin, Kabilan and Jack won their respective board prizes with perfect scores.
Both the number one team and number two team (Matthew McConnell, Harrison McConnell, Elizabeth Kay and Matthew Sprague) will represent the Gold Coast at the State finals to be held at Anglican Church Grammar School on the weekend of 15 and 16 October.
Somerset teams also came first and third in A Grade. In this grade Abhi Panda, Alex Taylor-Girdler, Marcus Ware, Sascha Von Papen, Stephanie Kay, Mayuri Yamaguchi, Talia Varcoe and Callum Munro all scored heavily. Individually, Abhi was first equal with 6/7.
Well done Somerset!
