The study of the different Humanities and Business subjects requires student to study the environments and society they live in. To create links between the topics studied and the real world we try to get students out on excursions when we can.
The Year 8 IAS classes have been studying coastal geography and this study was backed up by an excursion that looked at the Gold Coasts’ beaches. Their study focused on the coastline around Coolangatta area and Burleigh Heads and the way it has been managed. This was a demanding activity, as the students had to decide what information they were going to collect at each site prior to the trip and then design their own excursion booklets. The students really rose to the challenge and were very creative in devising different ways to measure the physical geography of each area. The conditions were great, with gentle waves, beautiful weather and one group even had a whale put on a close to shore display for them.
The Year 11 Legal Studies students recently had a very interesting day at the Supreme Court in Brisbane sitting in on a variety of different court cases. In the coming weeks the Year 11 Business classes will be visiting some factories on the Gold Coast to gain an insight into their business operations. The Year 11 History students will be visiting UQ and Years 11 and 12 Geography students will be in the Pottsville area studying attempts to preserve biodiversity in the area.
