A group of Year 10 and 11 boys participated in the Queensland Volleyball Schools Cup from 10 to 12 August. After a successful APS season, this would be a major step up in competition as there were teams travelling from as far away as Rockhampton and even New Zealand.
The team consisted of Brock Hudson, Will Harvey, Aaron Ma, Stewart Ford, Dom Bensley, Himman Lo and Ahmet Cuhadaroglu.
Friday was pool play and found us finishing second in our pool losing to Holland Park but winning convincingly against James Nash. The boys however started to see some massive improvements in their game. At the end of the day the comment from one of the boys, “we improved more in one day than the entire APS season” summed it up.
On Saturday the boys then kept their medal chances alive with an easy win against Kingaroy then backed it up with an awesome win against Stretton who were the top team for their pool. This allowed them to progress to the semi-final game for a chance to play off for the gold medal match. Unfortunately the boys went down in a close game against The Gap.
On Sunday they played off in the bronze medal match against Holland Park, the team that they originally lost to on the Friday. In a see-sawing match the boys fought back after losing the first set to win the second and take it to the decider. In a nail biting third set the boys were narrowly pipped 16 to 14.
The boys displayed massive improvements over the three days. They should be proud of the way they played and conducted themselves both on and off the court. They played with pride and were a credit to themselves and the school.
