Last Friday night at Bond University, the Somerset Senior Girls AFL team had the opportunity to play a game against Bond University’s women’s team. The game was set to be quite an event, serving as a curtain raiser for the Bond University North versus South Men’s AFL game.
After playing the weekly APS game against Emmanuel College in the afternoon and winning 93-1, the girls were excited to play on a full field against the Bond University women.
From first bounce, the girls played with spirit and determination, with Xanthe Cerutti scoring the first goal of the game within minutes of the first half. The girls held the one goal lead into the second half, holding their own against their tough, skilled and aggressive opposition. Unfortunately, the game finished with the Bond Girls scoring a goal late in the second half and winning 8-7.
Overall, it was a great game played by all, but it was Chelsea Blauberg who dominated the ruck, beating her 6’3 opponent to the ball on multiple occasions, scoring her the player of the match. Ms Lee must also be commended on her first game playing with the girls, drawing her expert soccer skills to outrun multiple opponents and gain possession of the ball. Despite the end result, all of the girls walked off the pitch with their heads held high, knowing that they had matched it with a team who have played together in the local women’s league all year. A special thanks must go to Alice, Karen and Meghan from Year 10 who came along to help us out.
The Senior Girls AFL team would like to thank our teachers and coaches for organising this wonderful opportunity for us. The game wouldn’t have been possible without the organisation and passion of Ms Lee, our assistant coach from Bond University, Eddie, and Mr Lunniss, so thank you! Hopefully we will get one more chance to play the Bond team again before the end of the year and walk away with a win!
