The 1st XV produced another dominant display of Rugby in the last round of the regular season to easily account for their AB Paterson College counterparts. The 1st XV racked up their highest score of the season in a clinical 55 minute display to head into the APS final next week with a degree of confidence.
Playing into a stiff breeze the game plan was to keep ball in hand and limit unforced errors. After initially coming to grips with the weather conditions, the 1st XV finally got into their rhythm and E’Shea Gafa, in his return game from injury, opened the scoring in the 6th minute. Next to add his name to the score sheet was eventual Man of the Match, Tyrone Grace. AB Paterson struggled to contain the 6 foot 3, 112 kilogram man-mountain as he wreaked havoc through the middle of the park with his bulldozing runs. Industrious flanker, Kale Brenssell scored the third try for the afternoon showing a good turn of speed. The other two benefactors for the first half were Left Winger, Oliver Thew and Fullback, Kai George who both scored out wide after some good lead-up work from the forwards and passing from their inside backs. Josh Vuta kicked a credible 3 from 5 into the stiff breeze to make the half time score 31-0.
The bench was cleared for the second half and, not to be outdone by their first half counterparts, the second half team piled on another 38 points in the form of 6 tries and 4 conversions. Outside Centre, Craig Hales easily beat his defender on the outside to score a simple try by Craig’s standards in the right hand corner. Lewis Ioannou dived over from close range. Replacement Hooker, David Korin produced a dynamic 25 metre run to score a great individual try, much to the delight of his team mates on and off the field. Others to get their name on the scoresheet included Inside Centre, Taylor Davies, Replacement Flanker, Leo Eshchenko and Kai George who scampered over for his second of the day. Kai added 8 out of a possible 12 points through his boot to complete the one-sided affair, 69-0.
