Lachlan Munro and Declan Thew starred for Somerset College recently at the Queensland Rowing Championships, which were held at Wyaralong on the last weekend of the school holidays.
The duo claimed a gold medal in the Men’s Under 17 Double Scull, with a dominant performance in their first regatta as a crew and Declan’s first regatta racing over the 2,000m distance.
In the Women’s Under 19 Double Scull, Katherine Plume and Jade Mansell rowed amazingly against strong opposition to claim the bronze medal and also rowed well in the Quad Scull with Brieanna Bischof and Hannah Neumann to claim fourth in the Quad Scull event.
Blake Mills made a successful transition from coxswain to rower, teaming with Aidan McKeon to claim a bronze medal in the Men’s Under 19 Pair. The pair held second place for the majority of the race before another crew collided with them in the last few metres of the race, costing them the silver medal.
Some of the other strong performances were Lorenz Muhlbauer and Ryan McClure gaining 5th place in the Men’s Under 19 Double. They also combined with Lachlan Munro and Aidan McKeon to secure 5th place in the Quad Scull event.
In all, 14 students competed at the Championships with some strong performances and just rewards for their hard training through the school holidays. The group will continue to prepare for the New South Wales and Australian Championships, which will be held in Penrith in February and March respectively.
