On Saturday 25 February, over 70 student debaters and their coaches attended the Debating Summer School held at Bond University. The Gold Coast Debating Summer School serves as an opportunity for both new and experienced debaters to learn about debating and adjudication.
There were courses available for Junior and Advanced Debating, Junior and Advanced Adjudication, and, new this year, the Showcase Debate. The Showcase was organised in order to demonstrate how debates are held in a formal situation and thus all the preparation was the same as a regular debate.
Somerset College versed AB Paterson College, arguing “Uniforms should be Abolished” and won the debate on the basis of their strong manner and connectivity of their case. The Showcase Debate was a wonderful way to prepare for the opening debating season for one of our open teams and the workshops provided a good basis for many of our other debaters to commence the season.
Debates kick off in Week 7 with Open A and Week 8 with Junior and Intermediate Round 1 sessions. Somerset College shall host both Open A and Junior A debates this year. Debates start at 6.00pm on Wednesday evenings and are held in Gallus and Cordner Blocks. Come along and support our debaters.
