Spartan Swimming

Swimming at Somerset enables every student in the College access to the pool with various programs and events throughout the year. From regular junior school swimming lessons to Swim Meets, the pool provides the backdrop for a multitude of programmes across the College. All programmes are designed and run by qualified and experienced staff promoting safe and enjoyable aquatic experiences for every student.

The Somerset Swimming program is now well established and commenced back in 1998 with the opening of our amazing aquatic facility. The Junior School swimming program offers one of the best school swimming programmes with students from Prep through to Grade 5 participating in weekly swimming lessons. These classes are the foundation for continual development and students show strong development as a direct result of these regular lessons. The program includes focussed term by term programmes covering all four strokes and a special kicking challenge in Term 2.

The swimming pool is also host to three College swimming carnivals, as well as both Junior School and Senior School APS swimming meets. The Junior and Senior Schools have swimming carnivals each year with all students competing in these events. Both carnivals are selection events for the APS swim team to compete at the APS Swimming Carnivals held in February each year at Somerset. There is also a Somerset lower primary carnival that occurs in Term 4 which combines fun activities with a showcase of the students' swimming abilities. The College’s youngest students compete in various races, including the fun and much anticipated inflatable crocodile race. Our young swimmers are assisted by our year 6 students in a morning focussed on safety and confidence in the water.

The Senior School Physical Education (PE) programmes utilise the swimming pool at various times throughout the year as part of their studies. Students undertake a variety of programs including structured lessons as well as learning to build and implement their own training program focussed on a biathlon event. The PE Biathlon event test students abilities to swim and run and is a highlight of our curriculum incorporating the outstanding aquatic facility at the College.

Senior School students are also able to elect to participate in the summer sport of water polo. As one of the premiere locations for the APS water polo competition, Somerset College plays host to the APS competition in Term 3 and 4. Water polo teams are selected with students from grades 7 to 12 competing in junior and senior team competition.
