Our Work

Our work brings together research, partnerships and global leadership to create learning that reaches beyond Somerset.

Through inquiry, collaboration and engagement with different perspectives, students and staff are encouraged to explore questions that matter, learn with and from others, and develop the capability to put that learning into practice.

Each pillar strengthens the others, creating an ongoing cycle of learning, application and new discovery.

Research: There is always more to understand.

Build a culture of inquiry in which students and staff investigate questions that matter, engage with evidence and share what they learn.

  • Create clear pathways for student research, with mentoring and opportunities to present and publish.
  • Support staff research through research translation, action research, inquiry cycles, fellowships and postgraduate study.
  • Develop collaborative research with schools, universities and other research partners, connecting expertise and shared questions.
  • Translate and extend research through professional learning, conferences, forums, digital channels and Beyond, the journal of Somerset Institute.
Partnerships: Some things can only be learned together.

Build reciprocal relationships that connect students and staff with people, expertise and experiences beyond their immediate context.

  • Develop partnerships with schools in Australia and internationally, including short-term student and staff exchanges and longer-term opportunities such as gap year pathways.
  • Work with the Somerset community, including alumni, to create collaborative signature projects, structured mentoring opportunities and scholarships that broaden access to Institute programmes.
  • Build university and research partnerships for shared expertise, resources and collaborative inquiry.
  • Work with industry to provide mentoring, expertise and internship opportunities.
Global Leadership: How we see shapes how we lead.

Grow the capability of students and staff to work and lead across cultures, perspectives, and contexts. Leadership begins with self-awareness and develops through our capacity to understand and work with others.

  • Provide CQ and global leadership learning for Somerset students, including assessment, training and reflection as part of their core education and preparation for international and intercultural programmes.
  • Establish a Somerset Leadership Framework for staff that defines shared leadership competencies grounded in character and develops the self-awareness, relational capability and practical skills needed to work well with others and lead effectively.
  • Provide targeted leadership training and coaching for staff to support reflection, professional growth and the practical application of leadership competencies.
  • Use CQ and PRISM assessments across Institute programmes to deepen understanding of cultural and workstyle differences, challenge assumptions, and develop the ability to adapt and work across cultures and teams.
