In an era defined by rapid technological advancement and global interconnectedness, the role of creative disciplines has never been more significant. At Somerset College, the creative disciplines empower students to think critically, create innovatively and engage meaningfully with the world around them.
Creativity is increasingly recognised as a fundamental cognitive skill that enhances problem-solving, adaptability and emotional intelligence, serving as a foundation for innovation across many industries. Research shows that students engaged in creative learning experience improved academic outcomes, stronger motivation and greater wellbeing (Dusseldorp Forum & ACARA, 2023). Moreover, creativity supports personal expression and identity formation, equipping students with the skills needed to communicate ideas clearly and confidently (AEU & National Advocates for Arts Education [NAAE], 2023).
Within the International Baccalaureate framework, these attributes closely align with the development of internationally minded learners who are reflective, open-minded and courageous. Creative inquiry encourages students to explore global issues, consider diverse perspectives and develop the competencies necessary to contribute responsibly to an increasingly complex world.
Design and Digital Innovation in Education
The educational landscape is evolving alongside advances in digital technologies. Design is no longer limited to physical products; it now encompasses systems, experiences and interactions shaped by artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and data-driven technologies. Engineering and design research highlights that digital transformation is expanding the scope of design into collaborative, interdisciplinary systems that integrate technical, social and environmental considerations (Jiao et al., 2022).
Similarly, the creative industries are undergoing rapid digital transformation. Technologies such as AI, AR and VR are reshaping how artists and designers create, exhibit and distribute their work, enhancing interactivity and expanding global reach (Wu, 2024).
In Digital Design classrooms, students at Somerset College are not only learning to code but also developing an understanding of how emerging technologies can be applied creatively and ethically. From algorithmic art to generative design, students are engaging with tools that are actively reshaping industries worldwide.
Media Arts and the Rise of AI-Driven Creativity
The film and media industries provide a compelling example of how technology and creativity intersect. Recent studies demonstrate that generative AI is transforming filmmaking processes, enabling new forms of visual storytelling through tools such as text-to-image generation and automated editing (Zhang et al., 2025).
At the same time, AI is redefining authorship, narrative structures and production workflows across the media sector (Gole & Arya, 2025). These advancements not only increase efficiency but also open opportunities for entirely new creative expressions.
For students, this means that media education is no longer confined to traditional filmmaking techniques. Instead, it involves understanding emerging technologies, collaborating across disciplines while critically evaluating the ethical implications of AI and digital content creation.
Visual Arts, Sustainability and Contemporary Practice
Visual Arts education continues to play a vital role in fostering creativity, critical thinking and cultural awareness. Increasingly, contemporary art practices are linked to sustainability and social responsibility. Research highlights how artists and designers are integrating sustainable materials, environmental themes and interdisciplinary approaches into their work, contributing to broader societal change (Zhang & Shen, 2024).
This shift reflects a broader trend in which creative disciplines are addressing global challenges such as climate change, resource sustainability and cultural diversity. Through Artist research tasks and experimental works, students are encouraged to think beyond aesthetics, considering the environmental and social impact of their creative decisions.
Expanding Career Opportunities: Gold Coast and Beyond
The value of creative education is reflected not only in personal development but also in employment growth. Australia’s cultural and creative sector contributed $63.7 billion to the national economy and employed over 280,000 people in 2023 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2023). Locally, the Gold Coast is emerging as a hub for creative industries, particularly in film production, game design, architecture and digital media.
Investment in screen production infrastructure has positioned the Gold Coast as an international destination for film and television production. At the same time, growth in the digital economy is increasing demand for skills in coding, UX/UI design, animation and AI development.
Globally, the demand for creative professionals continues to rise as industries seek individuals who can combine technical expertise with innovative thinking. Careers in fields such as interaction design, digital animation, game development, architecture, data visualisation and media production are expanding rapidly, reflecting the convergence of creativity and technology.
Preparing Students for the Future
The Design faculty emphasises not only technical skills but also the development of creative confidence, resilience, and adaptability. Design thinking encourages students to empathise with users, prototype solutions and embrace iteration - skills that are essential across all professions. As Kelley and Kelley (2013) suggest, creative confidence enables individuals to approach challenges with curiosity and innovation, while a growth mindset supports continuous learning and improvement (Dweck, 2006).
As the boundaries between disciplines continue to blur, the importance of creative education becomes increasingly clear. Design, Digital Design, Visual Arts and Media Arts are not isolated subjects; they are interconnected pathways that prepare students to navigate and shape the future.
At Somerset College, our commitment to creative excellence ensures that students are equipped with the skills, knowledge and mindset to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Whether pursuing careers locally on the Gold Coast or engaging with global industries, our students are well positioned to become the innovative thinkers and creators of tomorrow.
