The Somerset College Open First Netball team recently returned from an unforgettable week at the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball (QISSN) Carnival, held over five days in Bundaberg, Queensland. With 65 schools from across Queensland coming together for the prestigious tournament, the stage was set for some fierce competition, and our Somerset girls delivered.
Somerset began the carnival in spectacular fashion, going undefeated through the pool rounds, showcasing discipline, flair, and teamwork. The team’s consistent performance earned them a place in Division 1, where they faced two high-pressure finals matches to earn a place in the grand final. The standard of play lifted again in the finals, but Somerset rose to the challenge, maintaining their intensity and composure to secure a coveted grand final berth.
The gold medal match saw Somerset College take on Canterbury College – a familiar and formidable opponent. With both teams playing for the title and pride on the line, the grand final promised to be a thrilling contest.
Somerset started with confidence and control, building a 10-goal lead at half time through slick ball movement, relentless defence, and sharp shooting. Canterbury, true to form, came out with renewed energy and closed the gap to just four goals. But Somerset responded with maturity and resilience. The defensive unit applied relentless pressure, coming up with game-changing intercepts, while the midcourt linked seamlessly with the shooting circle to re-establish momentum. Accurate finishing under pressure saw Somerset regain control and finish strongly to clinch the QISSN title.
To top off a remarkable week some of our students were recognised individually for their efforts:
The QISSN carnival was more than just a netball tournament – it was a celebration of high-performance sport, team connection, and school spirit.
Congratulations to our Somerset Firsts team on an incredible week of netball and for bringing home the QISSN Division 1 Championship!
