​ Somerset Chess Update

It’s been another couple of busy weeks for Somerset students with a number of events being held recently.

The Gold Coast Individual Age Championships were held last week with Somerset students competing against schools from around the Gold Coast in their own age brackets. There were a large number of successful students with the highlights being:

• 2005: Tony Guan (2nd place)
• 2007: Eason Wang (Merit)
• 2008: Aadi Rai (Merit)
• 2009: Ruhara Mapabandara, Malcolm Chan (Merit)
• 2010: Oscar Credland-Ballantyne (Merit)
• 2011: Kush Veeramachenani (Merit)
• 2012: Calen Tang (1st place), Arthur Chou, Kitty Pallister (Merit)
• 2013: Harrison Qu (2nd place), William Zhao, Sanaaya Mapabandara, Franklin Yang (Merit)
• 2014: Paul Sang Yum (3rd place), Marcus Wong, Dylan Hu, Sohan Pateel (Merit)
• 2015: Theo Appel (3rd place), Kelly Lau, Harry Qi, Callum Deay, Taya Liu (Merit)
• 2016: Bosheng Zhang (3rd place) On the weekend, the Queensland Junior Blitz Championship was held with a number of Somerset primary players taking part. Calen Tang scored 6/9 to claim the Under 10 title in a superb performance! Other Students that took part in the event were Jeremy Zhang, Theo Appel, and Kush Veeramachenani.

The Queensland Junior rating list has also just been released with a number of Somerset students increasing by more than 20 points, and some new students achieved their first rating.
