The wintery morning mist over Wyaralong Dam did little to dampen the spirits of the Somerset Spartan Rowers, who took to the water at Saturday’s Trophy Regatta with energy, determination, and plenty of Spartan pride. Despite the cold air and early start, the team delivered an outstanding performance across the board – one marked by tight finishes, personal bests, and a strong second-place finish overall, just behind regatta winners Trinity Lutheran College.
From Year 7 newcomers to experienced Open crews, Somerset rowers showed grit and growth.
The Open crews – both boys and girls – had strong showings in the prestigious eights races, where team cohesion and technique matter more than ever. The Girls Open Eight powered through to finish second. It was an inspiring performance against fierce competition and one of the most exciting races of the day. The Boys Open Eight, fought hard to secure third place in their final – a promising sign of depth and determination from the senior Spartan rowers.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the steady support behind the scenes. A huge thank you goes to our dedicated coaches – Olivia Sina, Andrew Butler, Alan Greenbank, Georgia Daly and Hillary Longstaff– whose commitment and care keep the program strong. We also thank the parents who braved the chill to cheer from the shore. Your contribution is noticed and deeply appreciated.
While Trinity Lutheran College took out the overall win, Somerset finished second ahead of long-time rivals St Peters Lutheran College – no small feat given their size and rowing pedigree. This is a strong indication of Somerset’s continued growth as a powerhouse in school rowing.
As the fog cleared over Wyaralong and medals were handed out, what lingered most wasn’t just the results, but the buzz of camaraderie, challenge, and collective effort. The rowers now set their sights on the South Queensland Regatta in July, ready to take on the next race with fire in their hearts and blades in the water.
Let’s go, Spartans!
