The Queensland State School Swimming titles for both junior and senior school were held in Brisbane from Monday 25 to Saturday 30 March. The Somerset Swim Club had over 30 swimmers compete at the event with some outstanding results.
Overall, the Swim Club’s competitors performed above expectations with more swimmers this year reaching the selection criteria to be selected onto the State Team, although the final team will be announced later this week.
At the Junior School Titles held from Monday to Wednesday, Somerset Swim Club had twenty swimmers represent the South Coast region. Day one saw many swimmers compete in relays while Amy Newton placed second in the girls 12 years 400m Freestyle. Day 2, Tuesday, was highlighted by two swimmers placing second and third in the girls 12 years 200m Butterfly being Valentina Pesovic and Isabelle Sly respectively. The third and final day was highlighted by Riley Rasmussen placing second in the boys 12 years 200m Breaststroke.
Swimmers to also make individual finals included 12 year old girls’ Bessie Dear, who narrowly missed qualification placing fourth in the 50m Breaststroke, Giselle Howard, and Luka Leonardi.
The Club had two swimmers qualify for the Queensland State Team being Ava Usher in the 12 years girls (third in 50m Freestyle) and May Zunker in the 10 years girls (second in 100m Breaststroke, first in 50m Breaststroke and fourth in 50m Freestyle). Well done to swimmers and coaches on these outstanding results.
At the Senior School Titles from Thursday to Saturday, the Somerset Swim Club competitors continued their great results from earlier days. Swimmers to make finals included Ciara Fay (13 years) 100m and 200m Breaststroke events, Brodie Brown (14 years) 200m and 400m Freestyle events, Millie Entwistle (15 years) 50m Backstroke and Hugo Vitiello who placed 3rd in the 15 years 200m Freestyle.
