Somerset College Netballers finished the 2020 APS season with some great results. Read on to learn how teams in both Junior and Senior Schools wrapped up APS Season 1.

The Open A team won their fourth consecutive premiership, the Open B and Open D also finished top of the ladder and the Year 7A team winning a premiership.

In the Junior School, Year 6A and 4A finished the season also unbeaten.

1st Netball Team win their fourth consecutive APS Premiership

Our 1st Netball team headed to Trinity Lutheran College to play their final APS game for 2020. The previous week they won the Wallas-Bassingthwaighte Trophy against All Saints Anglican School, convincingly placing them top of the ladder. The team only had to win against Trinity to take their fourth consecutive APS premiership.

With their captain Amaris Toia out with a suspected ACL tear, the team got off to a cracking start with Year 9 student Marika Ransfield nicely filling the shooting position in Amaris’ absence. All players competed admirably with continued effort throughout, pushing the score out with ease.

The girls were too slick in every position, displaying their skills and proving they are the best team in the APS for 2020. The final score 61 to 14 to Somerset.

Congratulations team and all the best for State Vicki Wilson Cup in the holidays.

The Open B team finish at the top also, despite being a very disrupted season of Netball. The team arrived at Trinity Lutheran College eager to finish the season undefeated. Although there were many injuries in the lead-up to the game, the girls were fighting fit and ready for the challenge. The skills they had honed at practices paid off and each quarter saw the girls extend their lead from 13 to 3 at quarter time to 46 to 15 when the final siren sounded. Congratulations to the team for their determination, teamwork and sportsmanship – they were outstanding in the way they represented the College!

Congratulations to the Year 7A team for winning their first Senior School APS premiership. The team went through the season without a loss, and so did Trinity Lutheran College. Clearly both were exceptional teams. They had both dominated their games, each with a goal percentage over 400 per cent. So when the two teams met for the last game, it was essentially a grand final between two undefeated teams.

The Somerset 7A team was very professional in their approach. They started fast and hard – only slowing down if things got out of control!. The whole team worked well together, taking and giving hard, accurate passes. Playing fast made it easier to keep the timing consistent and they took an early lead over Trinity. They then steadily pulled away to win the final match 33 to 15. Each player was professional and highly skilled; as a team they played as one. This is a truly amazing team, and will be a core group for future Somerset netball success.

Thank you to Ms Jeffleas, our captain Daisy who with Marley and Rio made up our leadership team. Thank you too to our awesome defence team of Daisy, Steph, Milly and especially Claudine for stepping up when she was needed; to CC and Marley for their reliability in shooting and to Ava, Rio and Ariana for their attacking drive and versatility.

Thank you also to all –staff, parents, coaches and umpires - who have contributed to a professional approach to Somerset netball as well as the making of this awesome team!

Congratulations to all netballers for a successful season.
