Celebrating with 60 pizzas, 100 students, a pirate, some pyjamas, some books and some water on a Thursday evening – how could it be anything other than than the KIP’s annual pyjama party for National Reading Hour? This evening, all in the name of reading, is always a fun filled and exciting event, especially for our younger students.
The Reading Hour promotes the important role and place of reading in the lives of children. Not only is reading a fantastic relaxation activity, but research shows the critical role it plays in success at school and beyond, in building vocabulary, in building relationships, increasing our ability to show empathy and in reducing stress, even for adults. It's also something you can do anywhere, anytime.
On the last Thursday night of Term Three, we had children in pyjamas reading all over the KIP – in the Aaron Blabey Zone, the Hairy Maclary Corner, the Lucky Dip zone and wherever they chose to sit and read a book. A special thanks to our Year 6 volunteers for getting involved in the reading.
This year we had a special guest with author Jo Saunders reciting her rhyming picture story book, Pirate Princess. It's all about a little girl who is invited to her friend's Barbie Princess party, and she hates dressing up in princess clothes. She's a real tomboy and will only go to the party if she can wear her pirate suit! Jo, dressed up as a pirate, and Daisy Symons as an able assistant, 'performed' the story with props to an engaged audience of students and parents alike. It was certainly an amazing treat and captivated everyone.
Thank you to everyone who helped out on the night and to the KIP staff for their amazing organisation and energy. It really is so much more than just an hour of reading.
