The Queensland School Swimming Championships were held in Brisbane last week beginning Monday 22 March and running for the entire week. The Junior School athletes competed for the first three days while the Senior School athletes competed for the following three days.

As it had already been decided there would be no National School Swimming event in 2021, this would be the pinnacle of the School Swimming calendar for our students.

Somerset College had three junior students and eleven senior school athletes qualify for the championships while there were a further seven junior athletes and another seventeen senior athletes swim for the Somerset Swim Club who competed throughout the week.

A special congratulations go to the following Junior School State Champions, finalists and competitors:

  • Jake Tickle 12 years - 1st 200m Freestyle
  • Maya Zunker 12 years - 1st 50m Breaststroke (QLD Schools and All-comers Record)
  • Finalists: Charlotte Gavenlock, Aaron McQuaid, and Jessica Melo
  • Somerset students who competed: Leni Grigor

In addition, special congratulations also go to the following Senior School State Champions, medallists, finalists and competitors:

  • Olympia Pope 13 years - 1st 100m Breaststroke (QLD Record), 1st 200m Breaststroke
  • Milla Jansen 15 years – 1st in 50m and 100m Freestyle
  • Mia Miles 13 years – 1st in 100m and 200m Backstroke
  • Bessie Dear 14 years - 1st 100m Freestyle
  • Holly Hembling 14 Years – 1st 50m Breaststroke
  • Cameron Donovan 17 years - 1st 50m Breaststroke
  • Sebastine Du Preez 17 years - 1st 100 Breaststroke (MC)
  • Ethan McCullough 14 years - 1st 400m Individual Medley
  • Isabelle Sly 14 years - 1st 200 Butterfly

This is a long list of very successful students representing Somerset at this years State School Swimming Championships. Well done students and thank you to our coaches Chris Urquhart and Cheryl Baty who supported them through the week.
